|
Theatre perfomances were an early part of the college's history. With only female students, the women portrayed the men's roles dressed in appropriate costumes with cleverly styled "mannish" slicked down hair.
All students and faculty enjoyed in celebrating Washington's birthday, an annual event in full colonial costume. Additionally, when the students' dads attended for the Dad's Day weekend,
short theatrical vignettes entertained all attendees. All stage performances were enacted on the concert stage in the Fine Arts Building until President McClelland purchased
the "Little Theatre" north of the campus off State Street, originally known as Liberty Hall. The college used this building until the Education Complex was completed in 1976
where the threatre is located on the second floor. Originally known simply as MacMurray College Studio Theatre, the college renamed the studio
Marian Chase Schaeffer Studio in the early 1990s.
During the 1970s and early 1980s, the threatre group held workshops for anyone interested in the art of acting. These workshops featured one acts from several plays during an evening performance.
The workshops were in addition to the two or three plays produced during a school year.
Illinois College students appear as cast members with Mac students every year for the fall and spring performances - crosstown rivalries overlooked.
Return to the Table of Contents
Programs provide the bulk of the material in this collection, and are arranged by years. Additional material in folders is noted after the play title. Many years are missing. Photographs (black and white unless noted) and slides accompany some of the programs, although the people in the images are not identified. A few folders contain information regarding the
National Collegiate Players, of which many theatre students joined. Two folders have information regarding the Spoon River Anthology tour undertaken by the theatre students in 1968 and 1972.
One folder contains several years of programs as the date is indeterminate. Play programs and handbills will be added to the collection
continually. One box contains unidentified photographs, slides, and a reel-to-reel tape recording from unknown plays and two CDs
from plays without programs.
